"Insider Information on Pilot Checkrides from a Retired Designated Pilot Examiner.
After 15 years of conducting Practical Exams as a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE), the most common question I receive from student applicants is, "What will be covered in the Checkride?" This has always been a closely guarded secret among DPEs in the industry. However, at the end of 2022, I made the decision to retire from a field that I am passionate about in order to spend more time with my family. Nevertheless, my love for the industry led me to find a way to continue assisting those who aspire to pursue a highly rewarding career. That's when I came up with the idea of sharing the "Checkride Gouge".
As a retired DPE, I am no longer bound by the obligation to keep our checkrides a secret. I decided to create a comprehensive guide that includes various scenarios and questions accumulated over the course of 15 years (2,500 exams) of administering practical tests ranging from PPL to ATPL. This guide incorporates the most commonly used scenarios from the nationwide DPE network.
Every year, DPEs are required to attend training sessions where we discuss current topics, the ACS (Airmen Certification Standards), the 8900.2 (our guidelines), and most importantly, all of our scenario-based questions. Prior to the practical test, the examiner provides a scenario (usually given in advance) that the applicant must prepare for. It's important to note that there are only a limited number of questions and scenarios that can be asked within each area of operation. By studying this guide and understanding the ACS requirements (also included in this guide), you will be fully prepared for the oral portion of the practical test."
